Media3 company representatives discussed with other publishers Internet content security problem
Media3 company Adviser of the board Vasiliy Gatov and Internet Projects Director Boris Tylevich participated in round table discussion regarding Internet copyright protection, organized by the Guild of Press Publishers. Participants discussed the offer of World Association of Newspapers (WAN) representative Mark Bide regarding ACAP protocol implementation, which allows tracing of the pirate content. “Major world mass media editorial offices continually complain on illegal news, illustrations and video records usage, which are copied by other websites without permission. For this reason WAN spent over one year to find the solution of this problem and finally a special Internet protocol was worked out” Mark Bide ACAP Project Manager said.
ACAP (Automated Content Access Protocol) allows or forbid, depending on what the instruction says, the automatic search engines to use the content of any publishing office. The purpose of ACAP is to enable content owners to restrict the control on its usage by third parties. ACAP pilot project started in 2007. “The Times” was the first newspaper which used the protocol on its website. During one year more than 400 major websites in 40 countries of the world joined the protocol, which shows the large scale of system implementation.
The solution of pirate content problem is a priority for the company’s assets; due to that fact Media3 company representatives were interested in WAN offer. They also brought to notice that only one-side support of the content creators won’t be enough for the successful solution of this problem. According to the words of Mark Bide leading search engines which aggregate news and information are not striving to join ACAP. Only French “Exalead” search engine (4th place in world) joined ACAP just to test the technology. Negotiations with Google, Yahoo and MSN haven’t reached any particular result yet. No negotiations with Russian search engines were held, first of all the project was introduced to media market.
Most of the round table discussions participants - representatives of major mass media publishing offices - agreed with the necessity to analyze ACAP possibilities to make its implementation in Russia possible.
